New Year 2010-11

Hello to everyone, and welcome back. We had a productive and busy year last year. We had a cocktail party to celebrate Leigh J's engagement and a baby gift was delivered to Jen F. We took a brake from perogies, but we did hosted a charity BBQ and Christmas chocolate fundraising.

Now let's talk about this year! Zeta is making some changes to our meeting format this year, we've decided to go back to being a Career Chapter, so we now meet once a month, have 6 socials throughout the year, and attend 3 City Council functions. We are going to have a skating social, a service social, a BBQ and 3 that have yet to be decided. (You never know one of those days could yield some yummy perogies) Our beginning day was spent in Merrickville having a wonderful lunch and leisurely shopping along Main Street. We have one exciting event on the horizon, Aimee is expecting in a girl in early December so we will be looking forward to meal deliveries or some baby shopping.

Keep checking back for new pictures and updates,
Zeta

2009/10 Fun for Everyone!

The girls at Zeta have had our first meeting, and we are making plans to revitalize our chapter with some fun, fresh ideas. The Ways and Means committee is planning the Purdy’s Chocolate fundraising, as well as Perogies in the spring. Our Sister Care committee is looking forward to planning Leigh J’s shower or event in celebration of her upcoming marriage. We are also looking forward to how Service will have us supporting the community, as well as what the Social committee has planned for us this year.

Get your 50/50 tickets...

On February 7, Zeta headed to Scotia Bank Place for a Service Project to sell 50/50 tickets at an Ottawa Senator's Game.

Four of us were in attendance and once we arrived there we were suited in the most flattering bright yellow jerseys you have ever seen with 50/50 written in large black letters across the back. Needless to say, you couldn't miss us :) We were given instructions, our posts and a bunch of tickets and then sent off to SELL SELL SELL! Luckily we were all put in the same section together so we could see a friendly face once the crowd died down.

By the time we finished I think it is safe to say that all of us were sick of saying the phrase "Get your 50/50 tickets, 7 for 10, 3 for 5" but it was for a good cause - proceeds go to Children's Charities and we got to track our own Sales for the Service Committee.

After we handed in all our tickets and money (and the jersey) we had pizza provided to us and then we watched the third period from a 400 level suite(which was amazing)!

Overall I think the Service Project went really well and I think we should consider doing it again in future years. Great job to the organizers - The Service Committee.

That's it for now...until next time.

How Much Do You Know about Beta Sigma Phi?

On February 3, Team Superbad teamed up against Team Awesome to compete in a Social Program Quiz that was all about Beta Sigma Phi. There were only two choices of categories which were International and Ottawa/Zeta. Some of the questions were easy and others left some of us staring into the dark saying "I think it might be time to review the good old Book of Beta Sigma Phi again!".

It was a close competition but Team Superbad pulled through in the end to win by 1 point....although they did have an extra member on their team so perhaps the victory should have gone to Team Awesome ;) (Hee hee, just kidding)

Everyone seemed to have fun with it and we all left knowing a little bit more about the organization to which we belong - Beta Sigma Phi.

That's it for now, until next time...

Zeta Games Night

Well we had our first social of the year this past Saturday - Zeta Games Night - and I believe it was a success.

The social committee organized the evening with snacks and lots of fun and interesting games to choose from. We started the evening with a few snacks and then a little catchup (especially since we had just learned that one of the girls has to leave town for a few months - we'll miss you!). Then a few of the girls had a few rounds of Wii Tennis and Bowling to get themselves warmed up before we started in on the rest of the games. We attempted to play the People Magazine game but it turned out to be a little outdated (2002) and it was much more difficult than one would have ever imagined - who knew pop trivia could be difficult? ;) So instead we all decided to have a game of Cranium. We were broken into three teams but there was plenty of helping each other out as was necessary!! However Christine and Jen.H kicked our butts in the end with a flying lead over the rest of us - Great teamwork guys!

We had a few laughs before everyone had to leave with PlayStation SingStar (a glorified karoke game - but great fun!), I especially liked the girls version of Ice Ice Baby and Baby Got Back!!

All in all, I think everyone had a good time and we look forward to the next social activity which will take place sometime in June (pool party..woo hoo!!). Until next time...

Mid-year Review

So it has been a while since our last update but it has been quite busy for the past few months.

In June we had a backyard pool party and BBQ to say "see you soon" to one of our members as she was hitting the road and heading for Washington. It was sad to see her go but we are still in regular contact and she will be coming back in a couple of years!! She is missed though (but she recently attended a meeting as a guest which was really nice) :)

In August we all met again for a Mexican Fiesta to kick off the new year. This year we changed the format of our meetings which means we alternate between business and social meetings. Everyone seems to enjoy the social aspect of it and we have done some fun stuff and gotten to know each other a little better as a result. However, with fewer business meetings this also means there has been lots of things to address at each business meeting which makes for a busy agenda! Outside of the regular meetings we have been keeping busy as well - we volunteered at the MS Christmas Party, sold Purdy's chocolates to raise money for the Canadian Mental Health Association and had a Spaghetti dinner sorting party, attended the City Council Christmas Meeting and had a Games Night. Of course Sister Care is doing a wonderful job ensuring that everyone is well taken care of including Christine after the birth of her beautiful baby girl - Congratulations Christine!!! and Aimee after her surgery in December. In addition to all of this we had two members join our chapter this year - we extend a big welcome to Karen and Jeanene!

Well that is it for now...until next time :)

Spring? Are you there?

Mother Nature can throw all the snow she wants but that didn't stop members of Zeta from volunteering at the 2008 Women's Show at the Ottawa Congress Centre on March 8th. Despite the flurries outside there was a pretty good turnout and lots of women were interested to know more about Beta Sigma Phi. Here's a picture from our booth:

Coming up in May we're forming a united front at the 7th Annual B.A.R.K. Walkathon (Bytown Association for Rescued Kanines) - this local charitable organization finds forever homes for dogs all around the Ottawa Valley. Each dog is placed in foster care until it is adopted, and no animals are euthanized. These volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year and we're eager to raise funds to help out these dedicated people and the four-legged friends they protect.

Chinese Open House

In January, we rang in the Chinese New Year a little early with an open house for past and present members. This is the 2nd annual, and we had a great turnout with approximately 25 people! Guests enjoyed Chinese cuisine including chicken fried rice, Laura's own homemade chow mien, and assorted potstickers.

Happy New Year!

Hard to believe it's 2008 already!
Here is a picture of some of us at a November meeting where our treasurer had gingerbread houses for her program! Fun and tasty at the same time!

Zeta is starting the year off with a Chinese New Year Open House this coming Sunday, January 27th for all present and past members of Zeta, as well as their families. Should be a good time!

On February 9th we make our famous pierogies again! What a long day it will be, but we're all looking forward to tasting them again.

Watch for us in March as we volunteer at the women's show at Lansdowne Park!

A Mid-Year Update!

Well, we've been a busy crew this year so far! Hard to believe it's almost Christmas again...

Our Murder Mystery night had to be postponed, but the group that was available that evening had dinner at Boston Pizza and rented a movie.

We sold Purdy's Christmas chocolate assortments to our various friends and coworkers, with a portion of the proceeds going towards the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada. We took last Friday night to have a potluck spaghetti dinner at Laura's house and sorted the orders when dinner was finished.

On Sunday, December 2nd, five of us volunteered at the 2007 annual Multiple Sclerosis Christmas Party. It was held at Lakeside Gardens, and this is the 27th year that Beta Sigma Phi has organized the event, all thanks to the hard work and dedication of Helen Barnard. We helped serve sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fruit, and dessert, then when Santa arrived, we helped him spread the joy and pass out Christmas gifts. Each year, every Ottawa BSP chapter donates $30 towards the MS Christmas Party, and Helen uses the funds to purchase assorted Christmas gifts for MS patients. It was so nice to be a part of such a great cause and fun event. We even got our picture taken with CJOH's own J.J. Clarke!

Coming soon, we'll ring in the Chinese New Year and find out "who dunnit" at our Murder Mystery evening!!

Mother's Day Tea

This year we celebrated our Mothers by taking them to the Chateau Laurier to enjoy afternoon tea. It was so nice and classy; our mom's really enjoyed the treat.

Founder's Day

This year's Founder's Day was fantastic! All the girls got dressed up a la "Breakfast at Tiffany's" style! We enjoyed a great dinner at the Centurion Centre and were able to network with most other chapter's in the Ottawa area.
